Like livestock farming, beekeeping was a relatively recent ” conquest ” in human history. The exact historical period in which humans began raising bees is unknown, but it appears that beekeeping was a widely practiced activity at least 2,500 years before Christ, as evidenced by various wall paintings found in Egypt .
The first apiary was likely simply a log collected from nature, containing a colony of bees, which was kept handy by humans to periodically collect the precious honey. Humans soon realized that it was possible to house a swarm within an artificially constructed structure , such as a hive made from wood fragments or bark, or woven straw and wicker baskets covered with clay.
Gradually, humans mastered the techniques of housing and breeding bees, establishing actual hives and rationally organizing honey harvesting . For centuries, bees have been human companions, and in all of this, great credit must be given to monastic communities , the custodians of centuries-old traditions and knowledge.
Modern beekeeping , however, only began in the mid- 19th century , when the American Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth , a reverend from Philadelphia and a great bee enthusiast, invented the movable honeycomb , still used throughout the world as a basic beekeeping tool. It was 1851 when Langstroth invented this system of “containers” that allowed bees to deposit honey inside them, yet were also easily removable from the external structure of the hive.
Modern beekeeping (sometimes also called apiculture) developed during the twentieth century , and today the necessary methodologies are within everyone’s reach: here’s what you need to know to start your own business that allows you to obtain great satisfaction and – why not – potentially even a certain financial profit .
Beekeeping certainly requires passion , as it requires providing bees with constant and attentive care , ensuring they have access to what they need for their development. In return, you get not only honey , but also other important products such as beeswax , royal jelly , pollen , and propolis .
Beekeeping certainly isn’t something you can improvise ; it requires careful selection of the right location and the right equipment . For example, for those who already have a job and want to start a part-time business , it can be an excellent option, provided it’s carefully and precisely planned .
How to start a beekeeping business
To start a beekeeping business ” from scratch ,” it’s a good idea to first familiarize yourself with this world, which may initially seem a bit mysterious from the outside . You can begin by investing a moderate amount of money to purchase two or three bee colonies , a hive , and the basic equipment needed for honey harvesting, as well as suitable personal protective equipment . The total investment is a few hundred euros.
At a higher organizational level, that is, for honey production structured in a real beekeeping company , the sums required as an investment are certainly higher, and can be around 30-40,000 euros .
It is certainly a good idea, especially in the early stages, to be supported by a professional figure such as an expert beekeeper who is able to satisfy our curiosity and doubts, and to support the implementation of beekeeping .
A fundamental requirement is, without a doubt, having a suitable environment for bees, in which these hardworking insects can have access to clean water and sufficient food . The best places are certainly those located near fields , crops , meadows , and woods where abundant and frequent flowering occurs .
Once you have identified a location that meets these fundamental requirements, it is equally essential to obtain information from the local health authorities regarding health regulations , as well as all the provisions concerning safety aspects such as, for example, minimum distances from residential areas, roads, and so on.
During this information-gathering phase, it’s also a good idea to check whether there are any incentives available for starting a beekeeping business : these could be, for example, financing guaranteed by local authorities or tax breaks .
Incentives related to the world of agricultural entrepreneurship are in fact an important promotional tool that many regions, provinces, and municipalities make available to those intending to start their own production business.
The equipment needed for beekeeping deserves a separate discussion , to which we dedicate a specific guide, as does the choice of bees .
CreaImpresa also offers valuable online advice on public funding for specific sectors to those who purchase the kit.
Beekeeping products
Beekeeping typically produces various products. Among these, the most important is certainly honey , which is obtained by transforming the sugary substances that bees collect in nature: flower nectar and honeydew (a derivative of plant sap) .
Depending on the plant species the bees source, different types of honey can be obtained , such as acacia, chestnut, medlar, citrus, wildflower, mountain flower, and so on. Honey should be sold at a price of at least 6 euros per kilogram to cover production costs.
Other products are represented by:
- Royal jelly
is secreted by glands of worker bees and provides nourishment for the bees during their first days of life, as well as the only food queens consume throughout their lives. The quantities available are extremely small: approximately 300-500 grams per year for each hive. For this reason, royal jelly is a highly prized product, commanding high prices. - Propolis
is a true “building material”, used by bees to vary the size of the hive opening, but also to fill, close or strengthen the combs and to line the internal walls. - Pollen:
Bees collect pollen from flowers using their hind legs, which are equipped with bristles or “pollen brushes.” This pollen is carried back to the hive and used to feed the larvae. - Beeswax
This product is a secretion used for the construction of honeycombs.
Being a beekeeper: not just honey
Starting a beekeeping business can be a viable economic option, and not only because of the possibility of trading bee products such as honey and other products. In fact, beekeeping can also be directed, for example, at producing bee swarms or raising queen bees .
Another interesting alternative is beekeeping aimed at providing pollination services : in this case, swarms can be ” rented ” by agricultural companies wishing to promote the pollination of, for example, fruit crops. Bees, in fact, are insects called pollinators : as they fly from flower to flower in search of nectar, they also carry pollen with them, promoting the reproduction of plant species.

Spett.le Sig. Pasquale Angrisani,
Fiducioso ringrazio e Le porgo distinti saluti Ennio Colletti.
Questo articolo è molto interessante e completo, tratta tutti i pinti salienti dell’argomento. Mi ha chiarito alcuni dubbi.
Vorrei iniziare questo affascinante hobby e farlo sviluppare probabilmente come attività economica.
Potreste darmi dei consigli?
grazie
