How does long-term rental work?

What is long-term rental?

Long-term rental is a type of contract stipulated by the motorist with a rental company, to be able to have a car for a pre-established period of time (generally from 24 to 60 months) by paying a monthly sum called a fee , inclusive of multiple services .

Another unique feature of long-term rental is the ability to choose the vehicle based on your preferences and customize it with all the options necessary for your needs, whether work, family, or personal.

Who can access long-term rental?

Generally, you can rent a car if you meet certain requirements, such as being of legal age and having held a driving license for at least a year. However, there are other requirements that vary depending on the rental company. Companies require certain guarantees to ensure the customer is able to make a financial commitment for several months, such as recent pay stubs or pension slips to verify monthly income.

The Single Certification (formerly CUD) and/or the 730 form are also required. Another essential requirement is a current account for monthly payments, which must be in the contractor’s name. Foreign accounts and accounts in the name of third parties are not accepted.

Who is long-term rental suitable for?

As mentioned, long-term rental can be a very attractive solution for various categories of drivers. First and foremost, for those who drive more than 15,000 km annually and therefore need a car that’s always new and high-performance .

This contract can also be particularly convenient for those who like to change cars frequently, as it allows them to avoid the depreciation of the vehicle when selling, which becomes a problem for the rental company. Furthermore, a long-term contract can be advantageous for those who cannot afford to have their mobility interrupted and need prompt assistance in the event of a problem, and possibly even a replacement vehicle for their needs.

What does long-term rental include?

The rental fee that the driver is required to pay monthly includes not only the chosen vehicle, but also a series of services that allow for peace of mind, namely:

  • Car registration : Long-term rentals typically include a new vehicle, so it’s necessary to complete all the necessary paperwork for registration and roadworthiness. These procedures are the responsibility of the rental company.
  • Maintenance operations : the rental fee also includes maintenance, both ordinary and extraordinary, at the affiliated workshops;
  • Third Party Liability Insurance (RCA) : Third Party Liability Insurance is required by law for driving in Italy, as it protects third parties from damage caused by the vehicle while driving. This insurance coverage is included in the fee;
  • Roadside assistance : In the event of a problem or accident, you can contact the rental company for assistance. The roadside assistance service included in the rental agreement is available 24 hours a day throughout Italy, but some rental companies also offer it in other European countries.
  • Other insurance coverage : Typically, the rental agreement also includes other insurance coverage, such as comprehensive insurance (which provides compensation in the event of an accident at fault or accidental damage not attributable to anyone, etc.) and theft and fire insurance. Additional coverage can be added for an additional fee.
  • Property tax : The car property tax is also included in the rental price, so the driver doesn’t even have to worry about the expiration date.

Therefore, the motorist who signs the contract will not only not have to worry about bureaucratic deadlines but also about any unexpected expenses, thus being able to better manage their budget. If additional services are required, the contract is highly customizable , but this, of course, involves an increase in the monthly fee.
