Writing is inventing, narrating, monitoring, reflecting, observing. Writing is conveying emotions, writing is sharing stories: stories are the engine of the imagination, the foundation of fantasy, they are the ingredients that have made the thousand lives of History with a capital H meaningful.

And this is sacrosanct and true. But how can we turn this desire, this need, into a true profession? How can we make money from this powerful passion? Becoming a professional writer seems almost like a utopian dream, so much so that many don’t even consider it. But, given that it takes talent and luck above all else, becoming a professional writer is actually possible.
Practical advice for becoming a writer
For those who consider themselves writers , writing is the natural fulfillment of a strong desire and is something innate. But, as banal as they may seem, certain “duties” must be fulfilled by those who want to become professional writers. These “duties” are behaviors that for some come naturally, while for others they can be valuable suggestions that help “unblock” situations of stalemate or doubt:
- Try to understand what you want to write about and in what genre: having a specific goal and being determined to achieve it means you are already halfway on your personal journey.
- However, be aware that to earn money by writing, you need to be willing to adapt some of your writing to the rules of the “market”
- Read a lot and about everything ; read more of the genre you want to write about (to avoid constantly buying books, which in the long run become expensive, visit libraries or find free e-books on the internet)
- always keep a pen and paper handy and write down every idea for a possible story
- write whenever you have the chance
- reread what you write many times and do it trying to put yourself in the shoes of the average reader, who is usually distracted
- Have your work read not only by friends and relatives , who can give us biased opinions: it is always necessary to have objective and impartial opinions, because it increases self-criticism and the possibility of correcting any errors
- Don’t be afraid to cut and/or rewrite parts of the text that don’t work upon closer inspection.
What to study to become a writer
The most suitable course of study for those who intend to become a writer is the following:
- classical high school or a high school with a humanities focus
- humanistic university , preferably the faculty of literature
- creative writing schools or courses
Creative writing schools
There are many prejudices about creative writing schools , but in reality, if chosen well, they are very useful for the future writer.
First, we need to dismantle the deeply held belief held by many that writing comes naturally and therefore requires no school to “teach” you how. Writing is an art and a talent, but it must be nurtured as such. Those with artistic talent, whether a musician, a dancer, or a painter, need guidance in shaping their skills to suit their profession; indeed, there are institutional schools that teach music, dance, and painting, for example. Why shouldn’t the same be true for writing?
First of all, the basics of writing are learned at a young age, especially in elementary school: the Italian language is an indispensable tool, one that continues to be learned and perfected throughout one’s studies. But writing is also a technique: there are mechanisms, tricks, and expedients that are often very useful during the drafting of texts to achieve the desired effect on the reader; for genre writers, there are certain clichés that are absolutely essential to keep in mind, without which the genre would have no reason to exist; many aspects of creative writing can be gleaned from regular reading of published texts, but they can also be “distilled” and taught by teachers who are experts in the field.
Writing schools , through readings, exercises, and specific deadlines, create short-term goals that stimulate ideas and sometimes eradicate blocks and doubts. Furthermore, writing schools are in step with the times, attentive to contemporary literary trends and evolving languages; if you want to become a writer and therefore earn money from writing, you also need to understand what will be profitable: if your ways of expressing yourself, writing techniques, or languages are now obsolete, because they belong to the literature of 10, 20, or 30 years ago, or because you enjoy reading that and have learned from it, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to publish and sell something of your own. Publishing a book: the publishing house
Being a professional writer and earning money from your fiction means getting your writing published . The intermediary for this is the publishing house , which in most cases invests in a book (a novel or short story collection), editing it, printing it, producing multiple copies, distributing them to bookstores, and taking care of any advertising. For the publishing house to know what you’re writing and decide to invest in it, you need to make it visible. There are several ways to make yourself visible, thanks in part to the advent and proliferation of the Internet:
- Monitor and participate in writing contests: choose those that give greater visibility to publishing houses and those that offer free publication of texts as a prize
- Attend courses at creative writing schools that have good connections with the publishing world (to determine if these connections exist, find out if: meetings with publishers are organized during the courses; or if the school has produced published work)
- monitor the websites of publishing houses that publish genres similar to yours, to keep up to date with trends and possibly participate in competitions organized by them
- participate in fairs and events related to books, publishing and reading (such as the Turin Book Fair, the small and medium-sized publishing fair in Rome, etc.), where you can stay informed about news and competitions
- Send your most significant texts to publishers whose contacts you can find (and perhaps to those who seem interested in reading something new, otherwise you risk just being thrown away without being opened!)
- manage blogs where the keywords (tags) are “writing”, “writing”, etc., or take part in websites that constitute privileged showcases for the editor’s eye, perhaps in circuits that belong to the publishing world itself
Structure of a publishing house
A publishing house has several top management figures who decide what to publish and why. They are:
- editors and scouts, who provide authors and titles.
- Editorial director, who makes editorial decisions and decides on book acquisitions and how to draft contracts with authors; the editorial director may also be the publisher.
- editor or editorial consultant, who is the one who evaluates and edits the text, that is, makes it accessible to the publishing house’s audience
- series director, who deals with the contents of the individual series, which represent the cultural and commercial choices of the house
Therefore, the go-to people for anyone wanting their work read are the editor or scout and the editorial consultant. Many publishing houses will offer to publish your work, in exchange for substantial payments to finance the printing of copies: be wary of anyone who offers you astronomical sums! A serious and competent publisher is one who won’t invest in a publication they won’t be able to market well, and therefore doesn’t ask the writer for contributions, or asks for minimal contributions.
Publishing contract between writer and publishing house
Here’s what your publisher’s contract should contain, according to Copyright Law:
- The Publishing Contract can be of two types: ” Edition ” or ” Fixed “; in the Edition contract the number of editions must be clearly indicated as the minimum and maximum limit; in the fixed-term contract the duration must be indicated in months or years, and this duration can reach a maximum of twenty years.
- The contract must also indicate the minimum number of copies that you intend to print for each edition (200 copies, 1000 copies, etc.).
The number of reprints, however, is unrestricted, as it is a different matter than the edition: an edition involves a revision of the book, with a new ISBN code, while reprints do not. The contract usually establishes the timeframe within which the author is obligated to deliver the work and also obligates the author to guarantee the enjoyment of the assigned rights. The publisher, for its part, is obligated to sell the work under the author’s name, anonymously, or under a pseudonym, as determined by the author in the contract. Other mandatory elements include:
- The publication of the Work must take place within the deadline set in the contract and such deadline cannot exceed two years, starting from the day of delivery of the text by the Author or the day of signing the contract, if later.
- The Author may introduce changes before printing, but may not alter the substance of the work.
- The Author’s compensation is a percentage calculated on the cover price of the copies sold, which percentage is agreed upon in the contract.
- The publisher must account to the author annually for copies sold.
- In the contract, the cover price is set by the publisher, who is obliged to notify the author, who has the right to ask for explanations if the price subsequently increases so much as to harm his interests.
- If the work fails to find a marketable outlet at the set price, before selling off the remaining copies or sending them to the shredder, the publisher must inform the author and seek his or her approval; the author can then purchase the copies at a reduced price.
Digital publishing: publishing a book at a low cost
The new frontier of publishing is the web. Some publishing houses or specially created websites offer the possibility of having your book published (even if not in a bookstore) at a low cost. The advantages of digital publishing could be:
- evaluation of the text for the purposes of its publishability
- creating book and cover drafts
- affixing the ISBN and EAN13 codes, i.e. the barcodes (important!!)
- printing and binding of books, from one to 50 copies minimum
- inclusion of the title in the catalogue of published works
- creating a web page about the author
- creating a web page about the book
- indexing of the above-mentioned Internet pages on search engines
- possibility of having the legal deposits to formalize the publication
- reporting on the main online book sales websites
- possible invitations to present books at various book fairs
- possible production of promotional gadgets, such as postcards, bookmarks, business cards
- possible customization of each copy
- free online quotes
However, there are disadvantages of digital publishing :
- In any case, it is a question of making an investment and therefore spending money, a little for a single copy, but a lot as the number of copies increases
- books are not distributed in bookstores, the main vehicle for public exposure
- often the formats and covers do not correspond to the author’s wishes
- Advertising and visibility are few: it is true that the Internet is a great vehicle, but those who want to buy books (we are talking about the general public and not inveterate and niche readers) in most cases do not search on the Internet, but go to the bookshop
If you’ve truly dreamed of publishing at least one of your works, treat yourself to its publication through digital publishing, as it’s undoubtedly the most cost-effective method. Or, consider it a starting point for your future career, as a first opportunity for exposure. Keep in mind, however, that this type of publication doesn’t make you or anyone else a professional writer: you’ll still be a writer, but you certainly won’t earn money from your writing through digital publishing.

Chi non risica non rosica!
Mi piace molto scrivere ma sono insicura di me e avrei una libro da pubblicare ma per la paura che non piaccia alle persone lo tengo segreto

Se vi emargineranno e non saprete il perché, se nutriranno rabbia nei vostri confronti e non sapete il motivo, se vi riterranno superfluo, fallito, disadattato, inefficiente, nebuloso, eccessivamente originale, facile all’ira; se vi tratteranno come invisibili, se vi biasimeranno senza ragione, se si dimenticheranno di voi, se vi tratteranno come l’ultimo Uomo del mondo, in quel momento saprete di essere il più grande scrittore del mondo. Guai a colui che non crede alla propria grandezza.

Scrivere , come se fosse l’unica cosa da poter fare, l’ultima strada da poter percorrere,l’ultimo senso da dare ad una vita senza senso.
Scrivendo , sognando, fantasticando ,così passano delle ore , dei giorni , del tempo che altrimenti avremmo speso pensando a ciò da cui in ogni momento cerchiamo di fuggire.
Scrivo da anni ormai, in principio erano pensieri,sequenze di parole che volevano descrivere stati d’animo nuovi ,inespressi, complicati.
Il tempo e con esso la sempre maggiore comprensione ,ha trasformato quei pensieri scritti in poesie , certo poesie molto particolari , molto personali, ma pur sempre poesie.
Versi che spiegavano emozioni, narravano desideri, urlavano sofferenza.
Dopo le poesie a cui ad onor del vero di tanto in tanto faccio ritorno , mi sono lanciato in romanzi , uno finito ed un altro in corso , un’altro ancora accennato e poi abortito.
Tentativi di pubblicazione? uno solo.
Una raccolta di quelle che ritenevo le mie migliori poesie , mandate ad un piccolo editore Napoletano che dopo mesi di silenzio , ad una mia telefonata ne fece seguire un’altra nel giro di mezz’ora dove diceva che non era interessato! Ma come tanti mesi per dare la risposta più ovvia e più attesa possibile? Chissà perché ancora oggi solletica nel mio cervello l’idea che quella raccolta è rimasta non letta.
E ora? dopo un primo romanzo da correggere e nel quale non credo più , c’è la gestazione di questo nuovo , questo un po più fino , più convinto , più sentito.
Scrivo e sogno , sogno di poter pubblicare , di poter guadagnare , ma soprattutto scrivo e spero che la scrittura sia la scintilla che rivoluzioni la mia vita .
Ho 35 anni , marito e padre , impiegato della peggior specie, di quelli che hanno il posto fisso e passano l’intera giornata tra quattro mura bugiarde e grige come il mio animo.
Di quelli che che internet in ufficio era il miraggio , il sogno , la soluzione risolutrice, il rimedio alla noia quotidiana.
Internet che diviene sempre di più , l’ennesima galera dalla quale fuggire , le nuove catene da spezzare , il peso che mi trascina sempre più a fondo.
Dicevo , scrivere; si è quello che mi resta da fare , è la mia scialuppa di salvataggio,il mio porto sicuro che seppur lontano e irraggiungibile è pur sempre lì oltre l’orizzonte.
Cosa vorrei dalla scrittura? dove vorrei che mi portasse? certo sognare non costa nulla e almeno nei sogni ,visto che nella vita reale non è possibile , voglio essere megalomane.
Scrivo con la speranza di poter vivere di sole parole e pensieri, di fantasie e sogni , di desideri narrati e di racconti all’umanità donati.
Sogno la terra di Spagna , una casa decente con giardino e campagna , pomodori nell’orto e piante di basilico in ogni dove.
Sogno i mobili di legno vecchi , un tavolo con rughe e vernice scrostata , un cane , una bicicletta ed il mare nella mia finestra.
Sogno serate passate in giardino con amici , un buon bicchiere di vino rosso e due spaghi aglio, olio e peperoncino.
Sogno mia moglie nuda in un letto con lenzuola bianche e fresche , con la brezza marina a rinfrescarci e l’alba senza il trillo della sveglia.
Sogno mio figlio felice , a pieni nudi nella terra brulla e onesta , mentre gioca e si diverte finché bambino e poi vederlo sicuro e forte quando in mano avrà preso il suo destino.
Sogno una vecchiaia serena , possibilmente con la forza necessaria a scendere e salire giù in paese con la bici e con le braccia abbastanza forti da remare sul mare .
Sogno una vita diversa , una vita che non ho ; scrivere potrebbe essere la strada che a questo sogno mi conduce , oppure più semplicemente può essere il modo per raccontarlo.
Una data e un orario. Il 14 ottobre 1981. Ore 12:34. Come è possibile che una coordinata così precisa nel tempo rimanga ancora impressa dopo oltre trent’anni? Eppure è così. Non si tratta di un evento traumatico o chissà quale tragico ricordo. E’ il momento esatto in cui ho capito di possedere un certo dono, una propensione. Ma il corso degli eventi è stato molto simile a quello di Luca, il Signor De Gaspari che si trova due piani sopra il mio commento. Le esperienze di gioventù, la curiosità, la voglia di indipendenza e tutto quello che ruota intorno ad un ragazzo adolescente che si avvia verso la vita adulta, portano a rimandare, ad aspettare il momento giusto per dedicarsi anima e corpo grazie a quel talento scoperto e che crediamo tale. La mia storia è molto simile al coetaneo Luca, simile nelle scelte e nelle strade percorse per giungere dove sono ora. Un padre di famiglia che come tanti cerca di sopravvivere durante questo periodo poco felice sotto molteplici aspetti. Ma al termine di tanti percorsi tortuosi, come dice la scrittrice un piano sopra il mio, Desideria, ci si ritrova a contemplare il passato come un film da vedere e rivedere nei dettagli. E qui credo sia arrivato il momento della resa dei conti. Il momento per non rimandare più e mettersi finalmente davanti al foglio bianco, premere il tasto “rewind” e rivivere passo dopo passo i momenti creativamente più fertili e ricordare chi eravamo e cosa eravamo. In tutti noi che abbiamo creduto nelle parole scritte, da qualche parte della nostra anima, abbiamo ibernato la nostra vera identità in favore della vita materiale e del tutto e subito. A casa, in famiglia, credo che mi prendano per pazzo, per esaurito a causa dei miei comportamenti strani e inconsueti. Ma non me ne importa, in questi giorni sono tornato ad avere trent’anni di meno anche se mi trovo in un corpo di trent’anni più vecchio. Sono tornato a ripercorrere i miei passi dopo aver trovato la strada che avevo abbandonato. Tutti noi abbiamo le nostre icone viventi, da Brown a King, da Ludlum a Grisham, ognuno le sue. E’ vero, un grande sogno sarebbe diventare come loro. Ma loro il loro sogno lo hanno avuto e lo hanno realizzato. Io mi accontento di viverlo per ora. Realizzarlo è già un passo che verrà in seguito, una possibile se pur improbabile conseguenza. Quello che è importante è scrivere, la pubblicazione poi si vedrà. Per il momento invio un abbraccio ai due coinquilini di questi commenti, Luca e Desideria, in quanto il tempo stringe e… “ho delle cose da scrivere”.

Ho scritto i primi racconti all’età di dieci anni, nulla mi ha mai fatto stare meglio dell’atto dello scrivere, è quasi una magia, ti siedi e le immagini cominciano a scorrere………..
Alle medie, il sogno che portavo dentro me stesso era quello di frequentare il liceo classico e proseguire con la facoltà di letteratura. Non sono stato abbastanza forte. Non avendo avuto l’approvazione di mio papà, ho frequentato una scuola per geometri. Ho iniziato a lavorare nell’azienda di mio padre, il quale mi ha considerato parte della stessa. Anche se in buona fede, (probabilmente ha cercato di fare del suo meglio, anzi, sicuramente ha cercato di fare ciò che considerava meglio per me) oggi tra banche e situazioni che hanno sconvolto il mercato sono praticamente rovinato.
Sono tornato a scrivere all’età di quarantaquattro anni, un testo chiaramente autobiografico, se non altro come sfogo personale.
Oggi a quasi quarantasette anni sto scrivendo il primo testo non autobiografico e non so assolutamente quale sarà il futuro mio e della mia famiglia.
A tutti dico, anche se molti l’hanno detto prima di me:
non abbiate paura dei vostri sogni dal momento che il non realizzarli potrebbe essere molto peggio, fate fruttare i vostri doni, non sprecateli.
Se Dio vi ha dato delle qualità non cercate la strada più facile, studiate, siate curiosi, sacrificatevi nel far si che tali qualità diventino prima un progetto e poi una vera opera, l’opera della vostra vita.

Mi chiamo Niclina .. ed è ormai da un paio di mesi … che faccio un sogno … in cui un uomo mi dice di dover scrivere un libro … io ho sempre amato scrivere … lo facevo ovunque mi trovassi .. sui muri , sui tavoli, sulle tende, ovunque io lasciavo il mio pensiero , ma lo facevo solo ed esclusivamente per me, per darmi forza dato che Dio , ancor prima che io nascessi, mi aveva assegnato un cammino abbastanza tortuoso, e un giorno , piu’ o meno all’eta’ di 8 anni , trovai conforto nelle parole , lo facevo solo per me stessa, piu’ scrivevo e piu’ diventavo forte ,,, adoravo quel foglio bianco … che poi pero’ non mi bastava mai … Oggi ho 25 anni ed e’ piu’ o meno da 3 anni che non scrivo piu’ … forse perche’ sono riuscita un tantino ad allontanarmi da quel cammino tortuoso…. ma come tutti gli scrittori sapranno i ricordi del cuore sono come un foglio ormai gia imbrattato puoi scegliere se buttare il foglio o correggere l’errore …. grazie per i consigli che avete pubblicato su questo sito ….
